Our campaign to make it illegal to create deepfake pornography has been successful! I previously tabled an amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill that would have made it a crime, which the government rejected. This week they have confirmed that they’ll be putting their own amendment to do the same thing.
Deepfake pornography uses AI to superimpose the face of another person onto sexually explicit images, making it look like they’re part of it. This is nearly always done to non-consenting women – 96% of cases according to a recent report. Until now, this has been legal!
The creation of deepfake pornography uses modern technology, but there is nothing new about the intention to cause humiliation and distress to the women they are targeting. Those who create these images are misogynistic abusers and it is right that the law should reflect this as it does for anyone who shares explicit images of someone without their consent.
